Following the boom of quartz clocks in the 1980s, the German designer Andreas Dober's Cantena (latin for chain) wall clock is reminiscent of traditional mechanical clocks containg striking mechanism. He contrasts classical mechanics with a surprising ironic design of the clock face: copper digits are mounted onto a chain borrowed from the bicycle industry. These digits move abwarts until the clock strikes the hour, after which they begin to slide down again; there is no hope though - in less than 12 hours, its reign will have come around again. Those looking for a clock with second-hand precision are not advised to choose Catena - in case they would surely be disturbed by its half-hourly chime...
